I'll have to go back and check, but I am pretty sure this January starts year six of the blog. Wow, that seems like a long time to be keeping this thing going! But with that said, I do think it is time to retire for a little bit of time. So many life changes over the last couple of years, and I am finding it harder and harder to find my inspirational creative posts.that once seemed to come so easily......I am sure one day, hopefully in the near future, that will change, but until then it may be a little quite around here! Thank you all for those that continue to check in.....and I promise i'll be back again!

It Was a Pumpkin Patch Picking Sorta Day!

While Stacy and Mick were busy settling in with the new baby, I grabbed the kids and headed out to the pumpkin patch....one of my favorite things in the world to do!

The feeling of fall is always so overwhelming this time of year (at least on the east coast!). Fun colors and falling leaves....life couldn't be better!! Thank you Emma and Luke for such a wonderful day!!!

Prince Edward Forest

It had been almost a year since we last visited Prince Edward Forest, and that was way to long. This is one of my favorite areas near the DC area. A beautiful up and down, windy trail..... Its still really hot and humid these days with a lot of rain, so we were pretty soaked by the end! Fun nonetheless!

Arts at Midnight

Tonight was one of my favorite nights possibly ever in DC. It was surprising to see, behind all the blue collar pressed suits and stuffy uprightness, this amazing creative underground scene exists. I realized, I need to explore more....

Galleries stayed open till 3 in the morning, exhibits crossed the town, and 1,000's came out to support the event. Some art was displayed in parks, while others on the side of building walls (see above), the library housed a funky live/manican fashion show, and a couple of row houses had been gutted allowing spray painters to go to work. My favorite was the Wonder Bread Factory -- an old building with lots of character....various artist worked (see top photo) throughout the building, while music was deejayed in the back with a crazy light show and tons of dancing (see below).

Patagonia Field Day

I have found working at Patagonia to be one of the best jobs EVER! I feel very lucky to work with such a great bunch of enthusiastic, motivated, and creative people. Patagonia, with its brilliant work ethics, gave us a day off to go play outside, and that is exactly what we did.....a slack-lining, hiking, climbing, and eating sort of day (Sarah's pie was the best)! It was great to be out of the store and hang with the crew. I love the shot above, as it captures each persons unique personality. Thank you Patagonia for being so amazing, and special thanks to the staff for making my work life that much more enjoyable!

Andrew's Segway Birthday Adventure

I did my best to surprise Andrew with a DC Segway tour.... I'll be honest, I personally did not have much interest in Segway's, but now I have a new perspective!!

I can't believe I got Andrew to slow down enough to take the above photo....

The experience was truly comic....Segways get a lot of attention....positive and negative!! But we all had fun shouting Yeha back to anyone who showed interest!

And clearl,y as the above photo illustrates, Andrew had a blast!

A weekend with the parents!

I LOVE it when I can get my parents to do a jump shot!!

One of the great things about our new place is we can walk to baseball and soccer games!! Tonight we hit up the Nationals baseball game. Our great seats allowed us, a birds eye view of the stuffed presidents that run the nightly race at the games.

Congressional Cemetery

I am so glad my paths have crossed with Alison and her family! She knows so much about the area, and is always willing to show me around....this adventure took us to the Congressional Cemetery, which is pretty much in my back yard. The cemetery was founded in 1807 and numerous members of congress, vice presidents, and locals were buried here. Super cool area to run around and explore!

Off to Boulder, CO and a Vist with the Allen's

We spent the second half of the week in Boulder, CO hiking around and exploring all the things that town has to offer! We hiked up to the Flatirons and watched some folks climbing....and then made our way to this cool arch, with great views of the city! (yep, always time for a jump shot!)

It is always a treat when we pass through Denver and are able to hook up with my old college buddy! We had dinner at the mobile food trucks....so hard to choose! Followed by icecream at a local shop. So much fun to see the kids growing up! And as always, thank you for your hospitality....I hope we can do the same for you one day soon!!!!

Andrew, once again, was heading to Keystone for a conference.....and once again I went along! This was the second trip to Keystone -- and i really don't mind if it becomes a yearly tradition!

It was a busy week, but did make it out for one long link-up day.....Cameron, Bross and Democrat. I was still a little PTSD from the Alaska trip, but did just fine. Although, right off I got us lost and was wishing for a GPS......but it turned into an awesome rock scramble to the top!!

We got to see my friend Brett for a night, who once again has inspired me to do the Leadville 100!

Summer Fun Surf Camp

This series of posts has been a long time coming. After a lot of trip digesting and technical computer difficulties I am back in business and ready to post one of the most mentally and physically challenging trips of all time....or at least of my all time (and yes jon cobb it was by far the hardest!).

In short, we started in a town called Donnelly and ended in McKinley Village - basically highway to highway. This route was the 2009 Wilderness Classic Route and after finishing this adventure I am 100% sure I have NO interest in ever doing a Classic!

We took 8 days to do roughly 130 miles of hiking and pack rafting....I've decided to not go into too much detail about the trip, but would rather share a few photos and journal entries along the way......Sherrie's Blog has more info and even more photos!! If you are ever in need of route betta, please feel free to contact me!

I lost my paddle poles off my pack today -- i just wanted to sit down in defeat and screem "You Win!!!", but instead we retraced our steps, found the poles, and were on our way. I love this shot! So great to wake up in a tent every morning! We actually took the mega mid which worked pretty well. A little wet on some days, but it fit three and our gear really well...and didn't weigh very much.

A trip to Alaska, and Sherrie's Birthday Celebration

It had been two years since I had last stepped foot in the state....a place so far away, and a memory that sometimes feels faded.....but as the plane landed at midnight and the sun was still up, a big smile came across my face! Once again reminded of the many reasons that I still call Alaska home.....I am incredibly grateful for the time I have spent there and the memories that continue to be made....I hope that will never end!!

Gay Pride Parade - Washington, DC

When I got home after the parade I posted on Facebook,"I wish every day was Gay Pride Parade day in DC". I have never seen the city so relaxed and happy....A new, yet odd, sense of community I had never seen before.

I took a lot of photos this day, but will only post a few. It was amazing to see sooo many people there in support of rights for all individuals. Over 200,000 people attended!

You know it was a good day when you are heading home and confetti is still blowing in the air, candy covering the streets, and locals jumping in the Dupont Circle fountain

I Donated My Hair!

Until now, and what an amazing place!!! I have heard amazing things, and yep, they were all true! It was a short trip, but we packed it in! Lots of great places to eat on pearl, Andrew's first boot packing experience, beautiful mountains, and really nice people. Can't wait to come back and explore the area a bit more!

Heed Warning - No Alcohol Allowed in State Parks.

Our weekend in Rocky Gap State Park was a great weekend with old and new friends, camp fires, delicious food, (My first banana boat experience will never be forgotten!), and cocktails!! And it was this last item that got us in a little bit of trouble.

"Trouble" probably makes it sound worse than it was, but the incident did put a damper on the evening. Unbeknown to myself, state parks no longer allow alcohol beverages. I quickly learned of the new rule when the park ranger came to our site and issued a 55 dollar citation to one of the members in our group for having an open beer in front of them.

Andrew began to shake his head when I began to express my concern. From my point of view, a warning would have been suficiant. The ranger indicated that when we entered the park the registration office should have made clear that no alcohol was allowed. Well, unfortunately, we were not one of the lucky ones. There were no signs posted, nor did anyone mention that alcohol was forbidden. Of course when I got home I had to look it up, and sure enough WAC 352-32-210 states:

Opening, possessing alcoholic beverage in an open container, or consuming any alcoholic beverages in any state park or state park area is prohibited...

So there you have it!! For more info check out this link "consumption of alcohol in state parks." Not sure about camping without beer, as I have always felt they go hand and hand.......or just keep in on the low! Enjoy your summer everyone!!

Rocky Gap State Park

Alana gets full credit for this outing!! And an awesome outing it was! Thanks for organizing!!! Rocky Gap State Park is located in Western, MD - about 2 hours from DC.

(As you can see I am still in love with jump shots!!)

This park had a little bit of everything - swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, or just lounging. We got out for an out and back hike with great views at the top. With such great company it was easy to forget about the heat and humidity!!!

NASCAR DC

After yet another day of house hunting, Andrew and I decided to meet up with Alison and Eric for an afternoon at the races!

This was a pretty serious go-kart track. They first put you in a one piece, and then make you watch a 10 minute safety video. Afterwards they deck you out in a helmet and gloves! I had NOOO idea Go-Karts could go soo fast!

No beginners luck for me, as I didn't quite make it to the podium, but lots of fun nonetheless!!!! Special thank you to Eric and Alison for sharing the day with us, and all the advice along the way!

Please meet Lucy Lou (above) and Guthrie (below). They are a brother - sister combo from the local humane society, and so far they have just been a ton of fun! I am quickly turning into the crazy cat lady, but its super hard not to when they are so young, cute and cuddly! Lou tends to pose for the camera a little more than Guthrie, but he is starting to work on his moves! More to come on these guys!

GGG, And I don't mean the G-spot

In my attempts at embracing this new life, that most would refer to as "Urban Living," I often run across things that I find quite entertaining. I am guessing for the most part, most folks (rural or urban) are aware of these oddities, but for me, perhaps living in the city brings it to light more than it has in the past........my new found city entertainment!

So, now that I once again live in a town that has a city paper, which in itself could be its own blog post, I find myself indulging myself in the Savage Love column. Which, if you are unfamiliar, is a very entertaining sex-advice column from the perspective of an openly very opinionated gay man Dan Savage.

In last weeks paper I ran across the abbreviation "GGG" which I had to look up, and found its meaning quite impressive and thought I should share. This is Wikapedia's definition of the term:

"GGG stands for 'good, giving, and game,' which is what we should all strive to be for our sex partners. Think 'good in bed,' 'giving equal time and equal pleasure,' and 'game for anything—within reason.'"

Temperatures started dropping quickly, and the weather outlook was fair. But that didn't stop us from all getting together and doing a practice run for the day to follow! The rehearsal was followed by burgers on the grill at the rental house! A perfect way to spend time with family and friends!

The Girls Night Out!

Most of us have said it at one point or another, "wouldn't it be awesome to have all of your closest friends in the same place at the same time?!?" Well, that was what this day felt like.....this is what the week felt like!! And it was just amazing!

The day started with a snow-globe assembly line, followed by some grocery shopping for the night to follow, followed by some photos out by some beautiful red rocks

(that involved some drinks pre, during and post)......

and a night with just the girls!

The Calm Before The Storm

As you probably could have guessed, it was an amazing few days spent with great people before the wedding festivities were to begin.....

We went for a short run around the beautiful red rocks near the resort and paused for a photo.....it was than up to the house to say hello!

Grand Canyon Birthday Celebration Continues - Hiking the Boucher - Hermit

Not only did I get to spend my birthday with two of the coolest people in the world, I also got to play in the biggest canyon in the world!

I was pretty excited to pull off the classic rim to rim, but with the north rim being closed it wasn't an option. We looked through the loop book and came up with a hike on the west end of the canyon.....The Boucher - Hermit Loop.....The book says do it in three to five days, the ranger said it was impossible to do in a day! Which is tempting, as it is truly amazing to spend the night in the canyon.....

We headed his warning and discussed the day between us, and decided to go for it......saying if we didn't reach a certain point by a certain time we would turn around. It ended up being the perfect day for the 20 mile plus hike.....cool temps and blue skies! The miles went by quickly, as well as a the elevation.

The three of us all smiles as at this point we new we would make it back to the steak house in time for dinner!!

40th Birthday Grand Canyon Celebration

I honestly can say that I am psyched to turn 40.
I continue to feel solid in my abilities, and continue to honor myself for the person I am and the person I continue to become......I continue to dream and continue to make those dreams come true.

At 40 I can say I have grown in mind, body, and spirit, and I can say that at 40 I continue to grow in these areas.....I know at 40 I don't have it all figured out, and "parts" of me still lack the centeredness that I long for. I can say I'm a dreamer and my dreams continue to come true....and when that one dream of mine doesn't come true, I remember it has perhaps been replaced by a new and different dream.

So, as I move forward, my thoughts to myself and other readers are don't loose sight of personal growth.....it is there to be found and exists around us on a daily basis.....Remember that every day can be a new beginning, a re-start, just take a deep breath and make it happen.....life is to short to let these lessons be passed by, life is to short not to be lived so make sure you live it to its fullest.....

The vortexes of Sedona are named because they are believed to be spiritual locations where the energy is right to facilitate prayer, mediation and healing. Vortex sites are believed to be locations having energy flow that exists on multiple dimensions. The energy of the vortexes interacts with a person’s inner self. It is not easily explained. Obviously it must be experienced.

And so that is what our goal of the day was....

So, the question then becomes, did you feel anything? I can't say that I felt physically "tingly" or "electrofying". But I can say that all the vortexs were beautifully breathtaking and therefore they did make you feel at peace, happy, calm........

We actually only made it to three of the four on this day......but feeling as charged as we could, and exhausted from the day before, we decided to call it and get icecream instead!

So Andrew and I scooped up Sherrie in PHX, made a plan, and headed north to Sedona. We ran some errands, and got a book called Loop Hikes in Arizona....the book offered a ton of great ideas. However, we quickly learned the distances were just a little off!!

After going a couple of miles in the hot desert sun without water, and learning we had about 5 more miles to go, we came across a stream of water! Nothing else to do, except to jump for joy!!! Certainly a reminder that extreme conditions exist in places other than Alaska!

So, our somewhat easier 16 mile day turned into being over 20! We ran in to a heard of javelina's on the way out and that was cool and made it back to town for yummy pizza and beer!

Viva Las Arizona and the Starts of a very Auspicious Destination Wedding!

We got engaged and didn't wait around......wedding plans started quickly as soon as we decided on the destination - Sedona, Arizona!

A random spot for everyone involved, as not a single guest was from the area. Sherrie (co-officiant #1) was able to fly out early and meet us for some fun in the Arizona sun!

Andrew, the official "I know nothing about being outside", continues proudly to be the best sand bagger out there! Although he was hesitant about the minivan rental....but by the end he saw the light!

Andrew's First Triathlon

I love being apart of someones first experience....their first 5K, first time climbing, first long bike ride....so it was so cool to be there as Andrew completed his first triathlon!! He has never been much of a swimmer and had been practicing!! And just kicked ass during the event!! So proud of him!! I know this photo is a bit blurry, but it reminded me of how you feel during long events....just a little off!!

Cross Country Trail: Colvin Run Mill to Potomoc River

It is such a great feeling to be able to get out for a run/trot in February! In AK this wouldn't be a possibility for about another three months!

We did this hike a couple of weeks ago when I was studying for boards....A great way to relieve some stress!! The trail was a relatively flat dirt trail. We did an out and back, but it looked like it went on and on!! I loved the stream crossing!

I love getting out with Brendon! He just has the best attitude and is game for anything!! Plus when he and Andrew get together they just hilarious!! Of course we ended the day by consuming as many calories that we burned at the near by IHOP!! A perfect day!!

Stacy, Emma & Luke Come to Town!!

The kiddo's were on spring break, so Stacy grabbed the kids and brought them to the city for a visit!!

It was bright and sunny for about the first 15 minutes they were here, and then it poured! We still made it over to Matchbox for dinner in China Town!

The next day was cool, but sunny! Luke had been studying Abraham Lincoln in school, so we headed over his way!

I forget how much you walk in the city, but the kids did great! We headed over to the Natural History Museum, where we saw a huge orchid display and went to a butterfly garden! There must have been 1000's of them! One landed on Luke and didn't want to leave!

It was such a great trip and hope they will come back for many more visits!!

Its Official, I am a Registered Nurse

The last "hoop" of becoming a nurse has finally been jumped through and I have offically entered yet another subculture that I had no idea exsisted!! The Alaska Board of Nursing officially posted my results last Friday, to my surprise, that I am registered nurse. In this very moment, I would not wish this experience upon anyone.....However, in my heart I know somewhere down the road those feelings (I hope) will change. I am still uncerainly where this newest degree will take me, but I am certain it will take me forward with new experiences that I will embrace as I have done in the past! Here's to having my life back and moving forward with a huge smile on my face!

FINALLY! School is over and I have some FREEEEEE time to do what I WANT!!! And the first thing I wanted to do was get outside!!

We found this great book called 60 hikes within 60 miles of DC.....and now my new goal of 2011 is to check them all off!!

It was an awesome trail....ups and downs....about 12 miles through beautiful forest and creekside views. I felt like I had not been outside in years.....or maybe it was just the feeling of knowing that I have my life back and have time to do the things I enjoy the most.....

After the holidays Andrew and I flew down to Bokeelia, FL to visit my parents for New Years....One of my favorite places to visit my folks....So much to do, beautiful scenery, cool birds, and warm weather! Thank you Mom and Chris for such an amazing trip!!

The parents and Andrew jumping for "Glee" as we were all so excited to be in warmer weather! We hit the weather just right....upper 70's the whole week!

Andrew and I were itchy for a bike ride, so we took off on the parents "townies"!! About a 15 mile ride and to my surprise not a single mechanical malfunction the whole time! We did opt for a ride in the truck for the return trip after a nice lunch over looking the water!

Andrew had the bestest of ideas of taking the Wii. I had doubts, as my parents, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, are not exactly techy inclined people! But boy was I wrong!! We spent the evenings playing Mario Cart, Duck Hunt, and by the far the favorite was Bowling!! Picture above is Chris with his best form ever!

We didn't get the boat in the water this trip, but spent a few days kayaking through what I think of as "mangrove" caves! So beautiful and so cool to explore all the hidden pathways!

The only way I can describe my last 1 1/2 years is to compare it to a very, very, very long alpine climb......your tired, exhausted, hungry, emotional - wrecked. Your ready for it to end, but you have not yet reached the end.....it just keeps going and going......and then finally, when you are truly on empty, you start to see lights, and hear the low rumble of cars in the near distance.....and then you smile and take that deep breath, knowing you are so close to the end.....and that you will make it.....and you do. Once again a special thank you to all of my friends and family who have been sooo supportive during this experience! I couldn't have done it without you! And a VERY special thank you to all of my classmates.....Thanks for all the smiles, laughs, memories, support - we did it!!

Morraine Lake, and What its Like to Live on the Road

Needless to say, we were a little wrecked the next day....We did make it in to town for a not so great dinner (bummer), followed by a not so great breakfast (even more of a bummer). Which leads to me believe that living out of a van truly is a life luxury! It always seems that life slows down just enough, food is delicious, everything you could ever possibly want in one movable unit! Doesn't get much better. Ok, I know I'm behind, but we have to go back to summer and the Canada trip with Sherrie cause it was just too good to not post about!

This day perhaps was one of my favorites.....It had everything - every element (wind, snow, sun), elevation gain, distance, FOSSILS, and pure exhaustion by the end!

We started out early with some things in mind, but no exact plan. We just knew there were a bunch of peaks back in this valley, and they all sounded amazing. We lucked out first thing by catching a ride in the back of a truck that took us a couple of miles in - all up hill. Certainly a chilly morning!

My journal entry for the day reads, "Woke up early for the big day. Caught a ride with the lifties up to the ski area, and then it was off to Mt. Richardson - which we climbed in a blizzard! Still more time in the day so it was off to Mt. Fossil."

Back to Canada and the Big Beehive!

I really do miss this place, and as school wears me down more and more, I crave long days out even more!

I have always enjoyed the Lake Louise area. The chalet is just beautiful and the lake is even more so! (although maybe its too big to be a chalet - need to look that one up!) We were a little spent from the day before, with some not so great weather, so running up a close by mountain seemed to make sense.

The weather quickly creeped in as we approached the top and hail began to bombard us! Not so pleasant in that very moment, plus it took the views....but when it cleared, there was a beautiful dusting of snow across the mountaintops.....just amazing!

Andrew's Dream of Running a Marathon!

Andrew threw out the idea of running a marathon.....Could be a good goal, except the training part! Regardless you had to have a pre-race time to be eligible.....already the pressure is on.....You see, I'm more a trotter, and am not really to fond of having to do things in a certain amount of time! But I can work on that! Brendon joined us for the Veteran's 10 K in which over 3,000 people participated (or at least bib numbers were over 3,000). It was a beautiful DC morning and we had a great time! I'll keep you posted on the marathon idea!!

Ben's Red Swings is this amazing play ground, with all kinds of super fun playground things that I am sure have technical words, but I don't happen to know what they are.....its beautifully landscaped, packed with kids, and right by the zoo.

It was only until later I learned who Ben was. Ben was a little boy who passed away of leukemia. In memory of Ben, his family raised money to build this playground - a place where all kids can come and play........no matter how old.

I just loved this idea and thought I would share it with all of you and the photos of course.....It is just amazing to see how creative minds can work to do things for others and their community!! Shark Mountain - And Knowing When to Turn-Around!

I ~heart~ minivans....really I do! Seriously those things are the best live-in-mobiles ever created!! We made a deal with the "rent-a-wreck" folks and up-grated to this very cool auto! We slept in the back every night which made for super easy poaching in random parking lots!

I hate being scared, I do! And its kinda funny I do 1/2 the things I do, cause I often feel I have this love hate relationship with it all.....! Anyway, Shark Mountain, an AWESOME ridge hike, or so it looked.....an easier scramble than the day before or so the book says......

But once again when we were high in the sky, very exposed, and butterflies in our stomachs....we called it....Its not always about the going up, its more about the coming down which feels so intimidating.....Billmeier would have loved this climb!!!

Certainly beautiful views from above, and another experience under my belt! Life full of all these learning lessons that never seem to end!

Three simple words, "On Your Left!"

I participated in the Sea Gull century this weekend. An event that attracts many folks, as the course is flat and beautiful…therefore if you are looking to achieve your fastest century time or you are a newbie just looking to finish, this is the event for you…..and attract it did! This year it was rumored that 11,000 people registered for the event and over 8,000 participated. Needless to say, that is a shit ton of people. During the day I witnessed three crashes, two of which resulted in an ambulance ride (one ambulance taking ~ 25 min to arrive), several people with bandages and road rash who completed the ride, MANY close-ones, and a lot of time spent fearing for my safety and life as bikers sped my me on my left AND right.

So of course, me being the statistical analytical geek that I am, I was curious how other events of this size are handled…..I found that in Colorado the Colorado State Patrol are trying to cap their cycling events to no more than 2,500 riders, stating safety and the ability of the city to handle such events as issues. However, the lance Armstrong foundation says it is not profitable for holding an event for less than 3,500 riders. A recent event in California that attracted 15,000 riders has announced next year the start will be in a stage format instead of a group start. What else did I find in my Google search? Not much else, except for news article, after news article of individuals that had been injured in some sort of cycling event.

Ultimately, I question where does the safety responsibility lie? With the organization of the event, and making decisions that lead to participants safety or is it within the rider themselves, to be alert and safe rider? Or both? I know capping a sporting event doesn’t sound great…for me included. However, where do we draw the line between participant safety and having a successful injury free event? In the Sea Gull’s defense this was the first year they offered an alternate route to try and cut down on the usual crowded route, and perhaps that did help…..

So what is the point of this post? Well, mostly as a person who has been on all sides of sporting events – a rider, a coordinator, a hurt rider, and now a witness to several accidents – it is a new perspective and one I felt needed to be expressed. For me, I certainly will be a bit more choosy in what events I choose to participate in, or will choose to start early/late to beat the crowds!! And certainly from this day forward, I will always in passing say, "On your left!"

Welcome to Canada - Ha Ling Peak/Mount Lawarence Grassi Link-Up

Banff, a place I could spend a life time and not touch the surface......
and when Sherrie called and said her ticket was book, I started counting the days!

So, I left Colorado (bye Andrew) crossing my fingers that I somehow had gained enough fitness to keep up with Sherrie.....The fittest people on Earth! Our first day out we chose to run up Mount Chinamen (that's not what its called now, they changed the name to be more PC (Ha Ling Peak)) and possibly link it up with Mount Lawrence Grassi. The ridge-line at the top of Chinaman was sooo cool, but smoke filled the skies so the views were not that great.

So both of these peaks can be climbed easily in a day with somewhat little difficulty.....put the link up reads "difficult route finding, third class rock scrambling, must be confident with exposure and risk...." And then as we continued to move upwards, fearing for our lives, we began to think....well, they got this description right!

Nonetheless, we did make it to the top, and it was beautiful. A great first day that gave us quite a bit of incite for choosing routes for the rest of the trip....grade three by The Scrambles book is out of my league! It was a long day out, nobody got hurt, we learned a ton about scrambling in Canada....Proud of ourselves, our abilities, decision making skills, and route finding.....do I need to ever do it again......probably not!

It was really amazing to see the number of people that were out at 1 am. You had to wonder where did everyone come from??!!

Of course the weekend flew by....the weather cleared up making it an awesome beach day with warm water and umbrellas provided. The hotel was just beautiful (the Betsy) and the food was just amazing! Bar hopping till 6 in the morning was a blast, and truly just a break from our normal routine of life really made this trip so amazing!

Yet another beautiful day out...especially for a long day!

I have never understood when your hiking something for the first time (a long one) how the thoughts of getting lost seem to echo in your mind!! But when its all said and done, and you look back to where you just were, you have to ask....why did I think I was going to get lost!?!

We decided to head up the south side instead of taking the usual route up to the top of these peaks...some minor, in retrospect, route finding....and a very lovely scree slope for the way down. Some great scrambling involved as well! I would highly suggest it!
(12.28 miles, 4572 ft elevation gain, 8 1/2 hours)

Well, that just about concludes the Colorado portion of the this vacation....I will admit I'm not sure if I had just forgotten how beautiful Colorado is or I just never realized it, but it really is an amazing place!

The Missouri/Belford Link Up.

I have always had a thing for link-ups.....And when I read the description of three peaks in one day, I couldn't resist.....Andrew at this point knows what he is getting himself into!

And if you did read the title of this post, you will note that only TWO peaks are mentioned.....that is because I didn't have enough juice to make it up the third........(which would have been Mount Oxford for those who are more ambitious than I).

We ran into a couple of locals that told us usually you do the link up in the other direction....meaning, it should have gone - Belford, Oxford, Missouri....not the other way around! Regardless, our total elevation gain for the day was over 6,000 feet, 12 miles and about 9 hours.....we were pretty beat!

I think Andrew is on to me and quickly realizing sometimes I can come up with ideas, that to others, just sound a little over the top. We were pretty wrecked after doing two 14'ers back to back. We followed that by a day of soaking in some local hotsprings! But after several conversations with locals that responded with you guys are crazy....!! I think he started figuring out that maybe not all people got after the way we were getting after it...my excuse "this is how its done in AK!!!"

Maybe not a lot to say about this one....except dark and stormy!!! We were still living on east coast time, which was the way to do it, as most people know I don't love mornings! So we did our usually 8 AM at the trailhead, and watched a huge storm roll through.

After some sitting it out, followed by a decision to move camp to a drier spot...our weather window appeared! We bolted to a different trail head that would allow us to reach the top with shorter distance, but a steeper grade.

The hike was certainly beautiful, and getting above tree line were we able to watch another storm brew. We called it about 1000 feet from the top.....! So close, better luck next time!

Mount Massive....Is Massive!

I was looking for long days, and sure enough I got them! And yes, Massive felt Massive! I don't think Andrew quite knew what was in store for him!

We couldn't have asked for better weather for a long day....windy on top, but it always seems to be. We took the standard east slopes route to the top.....14 miles, 4500' elevation gain, 8 1/2 hours.....

We met some amazing people along the way....one of those days where you just bond with others, and truly enjoy the experience......Lots of conversation about the upcoming Leadville 100 foot race (they have a bike race too)....guess I kinda got fired up....any takers???

Colorado Vaction: Day Numbero Uno - Mt. Elbert (14,443)

I'm never quite sure how to do the posts from a vacation...do I group it all together or post one adventure after another? This time I'm going for one adventure after the other, as they were just all a ton of fun!

Our first day was up Mount Elbert. We followed the "Colorado Rules" and got up early....The 5 AM suggestion from the near by camper was just a little early.....and for unknown reasons, our technical devices were often not adjusting to the new time zones,,,,so we were up early anyway!

A beautiful first day in the Colorado Rockies. Mount Elbert - About 9 miles round trip (from the north side), a 4700 feet elevation gain, and a quick hail storm on the top.....Our first 14er down!

My Summer Experience at the National Institutes of Health

Little did I know this summer experience was going to be somewhat life changing....Well, maybe I kinda thought that prior to starting, as it is the NIH.

And if you were wondering what the NIH is.....

"The National Institutes of Health is an agency in the Department of Health and Human Services whose mission is to employ science in the pursuit of knowledge to improve human health."

Its a place where everyone wants to be a rock star!
Or something like that....meaning, I spent the summer surrounded by very, very, very smart people with big dreams and ambitions....Who taught me clinical and laboratory skills.....People who encouraged me and helped solidify my own thoughts about possible career and life directions.

And Waalaa!
The final presentation that everyone on the team helped me to achieve. A special thank you to my co-workers for truly making it a very special experience for me!

That is a Henry James quote that reminds me of something my granmother would have said, as she certainly loved sipping ice tea on a hot summer afternoon......It has been a busy summer as they always are....My summer was filled with trips to the beach, long bike rides, special time spent with family near and far, an eye surgery, lazy days by the pool, two books down and working on the third, and a fabulous Arcade Fire/Spoon show! But it really has been a long time since I have had a "summer." One that was filled with heat and humidity. I could have done with a little less of the humidity, but it sure was nice to feel heat against my skin. Playball - Nationals vs San Francisco Giants!!

My grandparents were die hard Orioles fans and we often would watch the games and keep score......This was followed by my summers watching my cousins play little league....both experiences have stuck with me over the years!!

Some how or another keeping score has now become difficult....and I had forgotten how much fun it is to eat delicious junk food at the games!!

Nationals beat the Giants 8 to 1.....An awesome night with great friends!

I have said for a long time that Hong Kong is my favorite city....but I will say NYC certainly is very close in the rankings! I have spent time in cities here and there and each certainly has its own special charm....I have a difficult time putting a finger on exactly what it is I love about New York......It is a place that feels "accepting". That it doesn't matter who you are, where you've been, or what your intentions are....you are just welcome.

This trip we stayed in the Meat Packing District. The above shot was one of the amazing views from the hotel. The area is filled with high end boutiques, a great market, and great food. We never made it to the "Boom Boom Room" - the restaurant on the top floor - But I am certainly curious!!

We took a very hot walk through Central Park, fireworks over the Hudson, a barbie with some good friends, a lot of wandering, cannoli's, squash lessons, a world cup game, pizza........An amazing weekend in the big city and can't wait to go back!!

Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors

I know silly, but a hug accomplishment for me....I actually finished a book, and it actually had over 200 pages! And as far as i'm concerned they should make this one into a movie.....wow! If you have traveled in India, this is a must read.....John Shors does just an amazing job bringing the smells, sights, and feelings alive as he tells the most romantic love story about the Taj Mahal. A little bit of a twist to the original story, nonetheless, just amazing, rich, and beautifully written!

Udvar Hazy - The New National Air and Space Museum

This is a definite must do if you happen to be in the area....So if your in the mood to check out how the Wright brothers built their plane, how Ameilia Earhart crossed the Atlantic, curious to see the Enola Gay or how astronauts traveled to the moon...then don't miss the this museum!

The museum is housed in a larger hanger (not as big as the blip hanger in Akron, but pretty big!) and I felt like I was in Costco for the first time running from site to site and trying quickly to take it all in, but couldn't slow down long enough to learn as much as I would like!

I can't yet cross if off of my list of summer accomplishments, as I would like to go back and take the guided tour by someone who knows a shit-ton more than me! It certainly was an awesome way to beat the heat and hummidity of DC.

East Coast Climbing - New River Gorge: Who would have thought!

I will fully admit nothing makes me question what i'm doing more than a rode trip where I'm car camping, living outside, cooking off a coleman, drinking wine every night, making new friends every day, going on adventures, and going to bed physically exhausted every night....and of course trips with Tanya always include the bubble breaker challenge!!!

I have heard about the New, but WOW, I really had nooo idea....Top three of all of the sport crags I have been too....and even though I don't climb that hard, never have - never will ~smile~ I certainly have been to quite a few!

And of course I once again am lacking in photos of the the actual crag and the beautiful rock that was before us.....guess at this point in the game I just get tired of all the butt shots! So hear is a cool shot of a cool pooch that was jumping in the river! I followed soon after.....

There is a brand new beautiful guide book for the place that must be at least two inches thick....a ton of trad climbing as well....single pitch.....stiff ratings!! And a shit ton of fun!! Even though school ended less than a month ago, it feels like forever. It is always amazing to me how quickly we move back, or forward, into our daily routines, our daily lives…..Which at this time, I welcome and appreciate more than perhaps ever before. Congratulations to all of my classmates and a job well done! Happy summer, and see you in a few months! (And thanks for the great after party! Was so good to see everyone enjoying life!)

The Shorebird Metric Century!

The website said, "Come ride the uncrowded flat roads of Maryland's Eastern Shore."

What they forgot to mention was how windy the Eastern Shore can be! As parts of it were pretty darn windy!

Secretly, I like to think of the wind as my hills!

And secretly I don't have a problem drafting off other very strong riders!!

The 65 miles went by quickly, beautiful blue skies, great folks along the way, and friends and burgers at the end! Enjoy the Show!

Great Falls Climbing is Great!

Believe it or not I actually got outside for a day! Eric came out of retirement to give us a locals tour of the area! Andrew, his first day climbing outside, was amazing and flew up the rock like he had done this a million times before.

Great Falls is right outside of DC along a beautiful river and climbs are pretty much all toproped. Short approaches too!

It was wonderful to feel human again - A day without school, good friends, and just lots of fun. I'm crossing my fingers Eric enjoyed the day soo much that he will want to come out again!?!!? Enjoy the slideshow!

Another Semester of Clinics Done!!

I seriously could not have asked for a better group of folks to work with! The semester has been so up and down and these folks were ALWAYS there to help lift my spirits and tell me "You Can Do It!!". And an especially HUGE thank you to one of the best teachers in the world. She was that teacher that just got it....she understood our ups and down, pushed us to improve our areas of weakness, slowed down just enough to spend quality time with each and everyone of us......Thank you all for making my semester so enjoyable!!

The Ferry to Ferry Ride

This was a cool ride! Everyone had talked about it, but I had yet to actually do it. This ride takes you through wandering back country roads, past old chicken coops, and across two ferry's.

The crew, of VERY strong riders, waiting for the ferry! At the split I chose to do the 30 mile route instead of the 40 miles.....had to get to clinic....But it certainly was another beautiful day on the Eastern Shore and looking forward to many more!

Happy Birthday To Me!

I am now officially 40 minus a year. Truly I would have just rathered skip 39, as I think the years with the zeros have a nice ring to them! Thank you to everyone for all of the birthday greetings, and they continue to come!! It was a great spring day with hot yoga, a cherry blossom festival, dinner reservations and tickets to Vampire Weekend! Oh, and of course a yule log! Love to everyone! VLP

Trying to look like a Ski Bunny in Park City, Utah!!

Ok, that may have been one of the shortest weeks of my life!! And what an amazing place to spend it..... And I can't say I actually looked like a ski bunny, except for the skis on my feet!

And here the two first timers sit at the bottom of the lift. 3 1/2 days on skis for me - that even stayed on my feet, and a snowboard adventure for the first time ever Andrew.

And of course you are guaranteed to make it down the mountain in style, when you take a lesson with Nations Ski Instructor of the Year!

It was a short week, but certainly enough time to remember there is a life outside of school......And long enough for me to miss that life......

But knowing spring break means I am 1/2 done....well that just puts a smile on my face! Enjoy the slideshow!

The first day of spring break - and it feels like the best day of my life!

I am certain I have had better days than this one....but it does probably make the top 10 of best days ever. It is officially spring break, which means I am officially 1/2 way through the program....once again thoughts of a long alpine climb cross my mind....I've reached the top and now I just have to make it back to the car....but the car feel sooo far away at this very moment....but you just keep moving....and thats what I plan on doing.....Flying to Salt Lake in the morning for the two plank ski vacation! Knocking on wood they stay on my feet and not on my back! PS don't forget to change your clock!

Dreams of snowboarding.....

Sometimes in the morning I put my snowboarding outfit on in hopes that I will find myself approaching a beautiful mountain, covered with snow like butter, skis over the shoulder and snowboards in hand, the swish-swooshing sound that is made when skis cross the snow......But no, I usually end up in a classroom with 30 super stressed out students, who can't open their eyes do to lack of sleep. At least I can still close my eyes and enjoy the moment. Spring Skiing is on the Way!

The Back to Back Blizzard Madness!

Well that was a crazy couple of weeks. I know we get a lot of snow in Alaska, but I haven't seen that much snow at once in a long time. It just kept coming and coming.....! It has certainly been beautiful. The state declared it an emergency, houses without power for several days, and the state ran out of salt! School was closed for 4 days and we were a couple of hours late here and there...so needless to say this last week has been out of control. Today its hitting 50 and the snow is quickly melting! I know the days are getting longer and days are getting warmer, but I'm about ready for daffodils, ocean swims, and long bike rides.......! Any day now!

It truly was a beautiful night at the Kennedy Center. Music that you begin to get lost in as there are soo many musicians, sounds, movements.......music that I should have more appreciation for......A very special way to spend the evening before the next semester begins!

Squash: A racquet sport played by two players (or four players for doubles) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball.

My extent of racquet sports usually has involved a racquet in one hand and a margarita in the other.....so I was quite surprised when I picked up a racket and took it somewhat seriously, how much I enjoyed it! Below Me and the Squash Pro!

Urban Adventures - New York City

I recently was reminded that I am surrounded by 1000's of adventures.....but they just happen to be of the urban kind! And no better way to embrace that feeling by heading north to New York City.

I am really not even sure where to begin with describing the amount of things we did over this long weekend.....And I am not really sure how to express how amazing this city is......Top three with no doubt!

Perhaps the highlights.....Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and just touring the city.....A Beth Orton show where we were treated like VIP's, Dinner with some great folks who lived in a "Brownstone", A spur of the moment David Letterman show, Buttercup, pizza, and the best dessert shops on the planet.....Honestly, an endless amount of just amazing stuff!

A trip to Hawaii never seems quite long enough!

It is pretty easy to understand why people visit Hawaii and never leave!

Surprisingly to me, there is an endless amount of things to do....and even if your not in the mood to do anything, you just can't help but be happy!

This visit involved some snorkeling, bouldering, crashing a family reunion, surfing, whale watching, Japanese eating, and a visit to the North Shore - where the waves were so big I didn't want to touch the water!
