Russian Lake Ski Traverse

Maybe I should call this trip "Welcome to Alaska" as the views were constantly the classic postcard shot...The classic magazine article recruting folks to come to AK! Perfect weather for two days. We started with a ~12 mile ski to Upper Russian Lake Cabin where we spent the night and then skied out the next day. I hear there are a lot of bears on this trail, so happy to be doing it in the winter!

So many amazing photos...couldn't post them all here so check out this link for more...

Ice Pixies Weekend in Valdez

Last weekend marked the Second Annual Ice Pixies Festival in Valdez, Alaska. The Ice Pixies is a time for women climbers across the state to get together, meet one another, climb, be outside and have some fun. The festival reminded me of my appreciation for living in Alaska, the people here, the beauty, and the 1000's of things this place has to offer. Kremer, thank you for making it happen! Sherrie and I have combined our photos at the following link:

The "Intimate Bond" Created by Climbing Partners

Over the years I have had the opportunity to climb in a variety of magical places and have met amazing, talented people along the way...we sit by the campfire, we make dinner, we sometimes dance until 3 am....many of these people have become my climbing partner for the day or for the week or for the years to come. We have shared a day at the crag, an alpine adventure, a big wall experience...We laugh, we sometimes cry, we tell stories, we motivate, support and encourage one another...our relationship, in ways, becomes instantly intimate and completely connected. An unique bond formed and an everlasting memory created....

Ski Tracks, Ptarmigan Peak

I actually searched the dictionary looking for a word to describe the feeling…the feeling when you are back in town and look up at the peaks around you and think, wow I was just way up there…Maybe accomplishment, maybe enlightened, fulfilled, exhausted…but it really feels bigger, greater than any one word can capture or describe…

Bill Billmeier hiking to the base of the route after a five mile ski.

Bill leading the super thin, unprotected pitch!

We topped out just as the sun was setting...beautiful view of the Chugach Mountains.

It took us about 14 hours car to car - A ski, A hike, 4 (?) pitches of climbing, 3 (?) pitches of simo-climbing snow gullies, Top Out, Walk-off, and ski out...My biggest day of the season...

The Beauty of a Rest Day and the Iditarod

Rest Day /rest dei/ a day where you really could be out doing something, an adventure, exploring, pushing yourself to new limits - new places...yet you decide to let the body rest, let the mind center, and have a "life" day, an "in-town" day - A day to pay bills, to do laundry, grocery shop and all those other things you have put off.

I usually do ok till about 2 PM...then the restlessness hits me....I struggle to let my body rest and my mind races thinking about the next day....

Today was the Anchorage "unoffical" start of the Iditarod sled dog race. The offical start begins in Willow and racers travel the 1,150 miles to Nome. I have included a link to the offical website where you can track how the teams are doing. http://www.iditarod.com/
